Happy Organic September! September is the perfect month to embrace a more organic lifestyle. While it might seem daunting to overhaul your entire shopping basket at once, making small, gradual changes can have a significant impact on your health and the environment. Here are five easy organic swaps to get you started:
Carrots
Carrots are a versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed in various dishes. UK grown carrots are available for most of the year and among the most popular vegetables eaten. Opting for organic carrots can help reduce your exposure to pesticides and support sustainable farming practices. Plus, there’s not a lot of difference in the price between standard and organic carrots. It will cost only an extra £1 per kilo.
Onions
Onions are a staple ingredient in many kitchens, forming the base of lots of our favourite meals. You should expect to pay around an extra 50p to make the switch to organic onions, a small price for cleaner, greener veg.
Eggs
Eggs have been high up the news agenda over the last few years, from battery hen disease through to the recent scare with contaminated eggs from the Netherlands. Organic eggs come from hens raised in more humane conditions, free from antibiotics and hormones. They often have a richer flavour and can be a healthier choice.
Milk
Dairy can be a divisive topic, and it is most sustainable when consumed in moderation, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy some organic milk from time to time. Organic milk is produced from cows raised on organic pastures, without the use of artificial hormones or antibiotics. It can be a more sustainable and nutritious option. If you’d like to know more, check out the Soil Association page on dairy. You could also make the switch to organic oat or almond milk.
Chocolate
Indulge in organic chocolate to support ethical farming practices and reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. The people growing our chocolate deserve to be treated and paid fairly. By choosing organic (or produced to organic or better standards as it can sometimes be prohibitively expensive for small growers in developing countries to gain certification) you are supporting their livelihood. There are many delicious organic chocolate options available, from dark to milk and even white chocolate.
Remember: Even small changes can make a big difference. Start by incorporating these organic swaps into your routine and gradually expand your organic choices over time. By supporting organic agriculture, you're not only benefiting your health but also contributing to a more sustainable future.
