Rye is a beautiful medieval town in East Sussex. The ancient cobbled streets are lined with timber-fronted houses and stunning historical buildings. Only an hour away from London, this pretty coastal town is definitely one worth visiting. From the beautiful sunsets to the plethora of independent shops to the delicious food, there really is something for everyone. You may think that finding vegan food in this small town would be challenging, but Rye has great options for those living a plant-based lifestyle. From cosy breakfast spots to award-winning restaurants, Rye has so many delicious food options that will have you coming back for more...

 

Licence 2 Kale,  TN31 7EN

One of Rye's only fully plant-based establishments, Licence 2 Kale is the perfect spot for a healthy, delicious brunch. Choose from decadent smoothie bowls, fresh smoothies and juices and the best avocado toast in town. They also have a great array of vegan-friendly sweet treats including things like carrot cake, babkas and pancakes. Located in the heart of Rye, this cosy juice bar is definitely top of our list for comforting and nourishing vegan food. Plus they are dog friendly! 

  

The Fig, TN31 7JE

This lively restaurant owned by a Masterchef Professionals finalist is a must-visit when you come to Rye. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, The Fig serves up globally inspired food that is sure to impress. Their menu changes seasonally, ensuring the dishes are always fresh and tasty. There are always multiple vegan options available and every one of them is delicious. The bombay cauliflower is a stand-out dish for us, featuring coriander sambal, toasted almonds and burnt lime. A fantastic spot for when you want to impress.

 

The Union,  TN31 7JY

A beautiful small plates restaurant and bar set inside a 15th century building in the heart of Rye. With a daily changing menu focused on fresh, local and seasonal produce. With ample vegan options that are clearly marked on the menu. We love that these dishes are vegetable-focused, with bold and interesting flavours. Definitely some of the best vegan offerings in Rye. 

 

Knoops,  TN31 7LD

If you are looking for a delicious chocolatey treat, Knoops has got to be on your list! This independent chain started out in Rye, so visiting here is a real treat. Offering over 20 different chocolates available as hot or cold drinks, Knoops has an impressive vegan offering. Choose from hot chocolate or iced chocolate and then pick your perfect % chocolate. All 54% and above chocolates are vegan, as well as their 38% oat m*lk. Drinks can be made with oat, soya, almond, coconut or hazelnut milk and they even offer vegan whipped cream! 

 

Ono Poke Bowls,  TN31 7JF

Looking for a fresh and healthy meal? We love Ono for lunches on the go. The service is always fast and friendly and the food is delicious. Originally a Hawaiian dish, poke bowls typically comprise of rice, fresh vegetable toppings and raw fish. However, Ono has some incredible vegan options on their menu including roasted Korean style cauliflower and spiced panko sesame mushrooms. With lots of customisable options to choose from, Ono allows you to build your own bowl exactly as you like it. They also have a good selection of smoothies and dogs are welcome. 

 

The George in Rye,  TN31 7JT

This Grade II listed hotel and restaurant is nestled in the heart of Rye. The building dates back to 1575 and has been lovingly renovated to create a cosy, luxurious space. Voted top 10 “Most Romantic Hotels” by The Sunday Times and “100 Best Places to Stay in Britain” by The Times. Their cosy restaurant is perfect for romantic dinners, featuring a Mediterranean inspired menu and a great selection of local wines. Though their vegan offerings are limited, they are tasty. The food is fresh, simple and delicious, with a focus on local produce. They also have an impressive cocktail menu that is best enjoyed in their courtyard garden. 

 

The Lemongrass,  TN31 7AT

This Thai restaurant in the heart of Rye has an extensive menu with clearly labelled vegan options. These include vegan fried rice, pad thai, spring rolls and much more. We highly recommend the vegan penang curry! Full of authentic, delicious Thai flavours, the food is fresh and reasonably priced. This restaurant tends to get lively as the evening progresses, with a happy, bustling atmosphere. Great if you're looking for something a little different. 

 

The Mermaid Inn,  TN31 7EY

This cosy restaurant is located in a historic 600-year-old inn. Located on the iconic Mermaid Street, known for being one of the most photographed streets in the UK. The Mermaid Inn was built in 1156 and was a medieval alehouse that was popular with sailors who landed in the Port of Rye. Offering clearly marked vegan choices that are creative and delicious. Vegan selection includes a vegan garden pea risotto, roasted Jerusalem artichoke prepared in three different ways, roasted cauliflower and a dark chocolate and nut torte for dessert.

 

The Plough, TN31 6AL

From the same wonderful team behind The Union, The Plough is a gorgeous country pub and restaurant nestled in the countryside just outside Rye. With a beer garden offering picturesque views of the Brede valley. With a warm atmosphere and friendly service, this quintessentially British pub offers up a creative, produce-led menu. Working with British produce and local suppliers, The Plough only uses the very best ingredients. With a changing daily menu featuring a good choice of vegan dishes. Their peanut butter cake is to die for!  

 

Other honourable mentions include Marco's, a Mediterranean restaurant serving up falafel tacos and homemade hummus is a friendly, relaxed setting. Hoof is a surprisingly vegan-friendly establishment, offering vegan sausage rolls and some delicious side dishes. The Globe Inn Marsh is a quirky pub located near the centre of Rye, offering vegan pizzas and changing vegan specials. Mahdi Lounge is a small curry house with a vegan menu section that includes korai, jalfriezi, balti and bhuna. Layla Mezze Grill offers falafel, hummus, vine leaves, patlican ezme, salad, wraps and veggie tava. Fletcher's House is a tearoom offering a few vegan savoury options as well as homemade, gluten-free vegan scones. Whitehouse is a small hotel with cafe and in-house bakery offering vegan options such as smoothie bowls, mixed grain porridge with rhubarb compote, build your own breakfast and sticky teriyaki tofu. Old Bell is a traditional British pub with vegan friendly dishes Including garlic bread, pizzas, burgers and sorbet. Old Borough Arms is a quaint guesthouse offering one vegan breakfast and lunch option each plus vegan cakes.
