How often should I clean my lightshade?
Lightshades are often overlooked when it comes to regular cleaning, but a build-up of dust can really spoil the look and performance of your lighting. Giving your lampshades a regular dust will help to stop dirt and dust from accumulating, avoiding yellowing or tarnishing. We recommend dusting your lightshades every 1-2 weeks as part of your regular cleaning routine, and removing them for a deeper clean every 6 months or so.
What should I use to dust my lightshade?
There are a number of different things you can use to dust a lampshade, depending on what it's made from. Your lampshade dusting kit should include some or all of the following:
- Synthetic duster
- Microfibre cloths
- A soft clothes brush
- Lint roller or masking tape
- Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment
- A hairdryer
How do I give my lightshade a routine dust?
To help stop dust from accumulating on your lightshades, we advise giving them a maintenance dust every week or two. For routine dusting, you can keep your lightshade in place. As with cleaning any kind of lighting, before you begin always make sure the power supply is turned off and that the bulb and shade have fully cooled down to avoid any burns. To dust high-up lightshades safely, always be sure to place your step ladder on a flat, stable surface and make sure you can reach the shade comfortably and without overstretching.
How do I remove my lightshade for dusting?
If your lightshade has a large build-up of dust, it will require a more thorough clean. We recommend giving your lightshade a deeper clean two or three times a year. To do this, you will need to remove the lightshade. Support the shade and gently remove it by undoing the magnetic closure.
How do I dust my paper lightshade?
Paper lightshades require a bit of gentle touch when it comes to cleaning. Our paper lightshades are heat bonded with recycled plastic in order to make them more durable and easier to clean. Dust the lightshade gently with a feather duster or a dry microfibre cloth. For more ingrained dust, you may be able to use a lightly dampened cloth, but make sure not to get the shade too wet.
How do I deep clean my paper lightshade?
You can gently loosen and clean off built-up surface dust using the upholstery brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner on a low setting. Carefully work in sections around the shade, pulling the vacuum attachment down across the lampshade with gentle vertical movements from top to bottom.
What else do I need to know?
Our paper lightshades are made using FSC certified paper. They are not suitable for bathrooms or any room with high moisture levels. Avoid contact with water as this will cause damage to the paper and may cause the ink to run. Always use LED, low temperature, energy saving bulbs in paper shades. Follow the instructions provided for safe installation. Avoid placing your light shade in direct sunlight as this may cause the colours to fade.
