Our sturdy, beautifully coloured laundry baskets are hand woven in Bolgatanga in Ghana’s Upper East Region and are the product of a project started in 1999 by Canadian, Gregory McCarthy. McCarthy works with dedicated artisans from the area and set up a dedicated area of his home to provide these employees with an area where the baskets can be easily produced on a daily basis. The baskets produced by these talented artisans are both beautiful and functional and are available in various styles, colours and sizes.
He is passionate about Fair Trade and as he puts it, "The weavers are the people that butter our bread and must be compensated more fully for their artistry. Our weavers are paid well for their work and receive 5-20% of the retail price as a commission in addition to what they were initially paid."
The Baba Tree Basket Company is both retail and wholesale supplier of the finest Bolga Market Baskets of their kind. They aspire to a new model of ethical business that sees all its employees as partners in an unfolding global transformation.
The artisan you see pictured with each basket is the one who produced it.
