Morocco - Mint Tea

Sweet, mint-based tea is enjoyed daily by Moroccans and offered as a sign of hospitality throughout the country. Historians differ as to when they believe tea was introduced to Moroccan culture. Although some say it may have been as early as the 12th century, others claim that it was only as recent as the 18th century. Morocco is currently one of the top importer of tea worldwide. Although tea making in the West is usually simple, in Morocco the process is a bit more involved, utilising an engraved tea pot, tea glasses and tea tray. For an authentic, traditional Moroccan mint tea recipe, we recommend this recipe by Christine Benlafquih.

India - Masala Chai

Masala chai is a creamy, spiced tea that’s most popular in India but is increasingly enjoyed around the world. Masala chai includes spices such as ginger, cinnamon, clove, cardamom and black pepper. It really is the perfect winter warmer with all the rich, warming spices to get you glowing from the inside out. There are lots and lots of different variations for masala chai recipes, we like this one from Feasting at Home. We also recommend local Margate business, Master Foody Moody's 'Magic Pinch Chai Powder'.

Japan - Matcha

Often enjoyed in the West in the form of a latte, matcha has a rich cultural history in Japan. Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony centres around the preparation, serving, and drinking of matcha as hot tea, and allows for a meditative spirituality. In modern times, matcha is also used to flavour and dye foods such as mochi and soba noodles, green tea ice cream, and a variety of Japanese confectionery. It has a rich, earthy flavour and is believed to be very good for your digestion.

Bolivia - Api Morado

A typical Bolivian drink, api morado is a brew of purple corn and pineapple with added spices like cinnamon, cloves, and orange zest. The drink is so thick it can also be eaten with a spoon. It is usually served for breakfast. There is also a white version of the beverage, api blanco, which is made from milk, sugar, cinnamon, and white corn. If you fancy giving it a try, we recommend this recipe from Bolivia Bella.
