Wood Block Printing in Jaipur | Meet our Textile Artisans

Block printing is an ancient technique for creating intricate designs on fabric using wooden blocks. This traditional method of printing has been used for centuries in various parts of the world, and it is still a popular art form today. The pink city of Jaipur is world famous for its wood block printing, and it is an integral part of the country’s textile industry.

Each colour from our hand illustrated designs is skilfully carved into wooden blocks using a chisel and hammer before being printed by a small team of artisans at a family ran workshop lead by Deependra and his four brothers.

The art of block printing in India dates back to the 12th century, and the process has remained largely the same ever since. This ancient art form is passed down through generations keeping the traditional craft alive. Block printing in Jaipur is a skill that has been passed down for centuries, becoming an integral part of the city’s art and craft tradition. The unique style of block printing from small towns and villages like Bagru, Sanganer, and Akola has become synonymous with Jaipur. It is not just a means of livelihood for artisans but also a way of preserving cultural heritage.

Our 2025 textiles are all hand printed onto Organic cotton which is left to dry naturally in the sun in the garden adjacent to the printing workshop. Accommodation is provided on site for artisans who need it and lunch is taken in the garden every day.

I love my visits here, working with Master Ji to mix the colours and seeing my designs come to life on the crisp cotton is such a joy. The dye is applied to the carved block using a brayer, which is a rubber roller. The dye is evenly spread over the surface of the block, ensuring that the entire design is covered. This part is always magical! The block is then ready for printing. Each block must be skilfully aligned in order to bring the design to life.

Block printing in India is known for its intricate designs and patterns, often inspired by nature, mythology, and everyday life. For AARVEN's Summer 2025 collection I have taken inspiration directly from daily life in Jaipur; pots of Chai, elephants that stroll the streets during wedding celebrations, dragonflies a-plenty by the pool and Kingfishers (which are such a treat to spot) and of course very cheeky monkeys found swinging all around the city.
