Handmade in Kenya by the Buguta Disabled Self Help Group, our colourful soft animals are sure to bring a smile to faces both young and old. These cute little African animals are made in a small town called Buguta along the dusty and dry red sand road town on the road we take towards our basket weavers. The group is run by the formidable and always smiling Mama Leah who was one of the founding members of the group which began in 2009.
All 6 members of the group have various disabilities, Mama Leah is a wheelchair user. She has taught all the other members of the group to sew and now they rent a small workshop which they pay for with the profits of the animals they make. Sewing these animals gives the woman a steady income in a rural area of Kenya frequently blighted by severe drought.
Our founder Bee looks forward to visiting this group on her travels as each time she does there is always a great welcome and lots of activity! You can shop the full collection here.
