LGBT+ Sustainable Influencers You Need to Follow | LGBT+ History Month

LGBT+ History Month is celebrated every February across the UK, and was founded in 2004 by Schools OUT co-chairs, Paul Patrick & Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders. This month we are celebrating LGBT+ History Month by highlighting some of our favourite LGBT+ social media influencers who are fighting for a more sustainable, eco-conscious future. LGBT+ people are often excluded from environmental conversations and spaces despite being at the forefront of many key environmental breakthroughs and improvements. We believe inclusivity is key to a more positive, sustainable and happy future so we wanted to amplify the voices of these LGBT+ activists who are all doing fantastic work to improve our planet...

Shelby Lee

Sustainability blogger Shelbizleee has a mantra that we really love! She believes, "You cannot do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that you can do." Shelby creates accessible resources on climate education in an easy-to-understand format. And with a BA in Environmental Science, she really knows what she’s talking about! She shares this knowledge in a beautifully colourful, upbeat, climate-positive way.

Vinti

We love Vinti's romantic outlook on life. Lifting many of his sustainable practices and beliefs from Edwardian and Victorian times, he reminds us that a sustainable way of living is no new concept. From clothes repair to home cooking to vintage shopping; Vinti's account is a great reminder of how to live a simpler, greener life.

Leota and Mikaela

Better known to their followers as @curlycultivators, this joyful couple share their love of gardening and growing their own fruit and veg with their followers. They also promote sustainable eating habits such as choosing seasonal produce, food preservation, and composting, all of which are great for the environment!

Alexis Nikole

AKA. @blackforager to her followers, Alexis is a firm favourite in the sphere of eco-influencing after gaining a huge following over the course of the pandemic. Her daily videos are not only full of joy, they are a fantastic resource for learning which common plants in your local area are edible (and which are not) as well as providing delicious vegan recipes using these foraged plants.

We hope you have found a few new people to follow! We encourage everyone to diversify the types of people they follow on social media and enrich their day-to-day lives with worthwhile, considered content. If you'd like to read about some of our favourite LGBT+ Icons, you can read our previous journal post here. You can also read an interview we did last year with lesbian parents Lucy & Stacey here.
