Our Partnership With African Promise | One Year On

Community has always been at the heart of what we do at Artisans & Adventurers. Supporting the communities of artisans that we work with is a vital part of our business and something that we are very proud of doing. That is why one year ago we partnered with the charity African Promise and have donated 2% of our retail sales (not just profit!) from every Kenyan product to the charity. Through the sale of our Kenyan products, we have raised £1,250 for the charity over the past year.

African Promise are a fantastic charity that support primary schools in Kenya, a country that we work in extensively and hold very dear to our hearts. The charity works to improve the lives of children in rural communities today and give them the chance of a brighter future tomorrow. African Promise creates child-friendly 'model' schools by building safe infrastructure, providing food for a daily lunchtime meal and equipping schools with resources including desks, books and teachers.

We asked the Founder and Director of the charity, Charles Coldman, about the impact that our donations have had and he told us; “The funds that have been donated by Artisans & Adventurers and raised by its customers through their purchases over the last year are enough to have paid the salary of an extra full-time teacher or to have provided around 100 children with a daily lunchtime meal. At a time when our costs are rising and the fundraising environment remains challenging, we are grateful for partnerships like this where individuals can support our work at no extra cost and where businesses have the chance to give something back.

Our stunning Kiondo Baskets come from the same area that African Promise works in so on our numerous buying trips we have also had the privilege of seeing the schools and witnessing first hand how the charity's CEO Charles and his team work to improve the lives of the children that attend them. Our Co-founder, Bee, says; "Like Charles (African Promise’s founder)we have fallen in love with this rural part of Kenya; its red dust roads winding to the various villages and the beautiful Mt. Kasigau that dominates the landscape keep on drawing us back. During these visits we have also had the privilege of seeing the schools and witnessing first-hand how Charles and his team work to uplift the lives of the children that attend them and therefore decided that this was the perfect charity to work with.”

Your purchase of any Kenyan-sourced items from Artisans & Adventurers will see 2% donated to African Promise in support of their programmes. A £20 purchase would raise enough to pay for lunch for one child for a whole week. You can shop our Kenyan BasketsKenyan Olive Wood Collection and Kenyan Soapstone online and in store now. 2% from every purchase will go straight to African Promise and help support their amazing work.
