Our Sustainability Reading List | Read a Book Day

We're big bookworms here at AARVEN so we were thrilled to learn that it's Read a Book Day tomorrow! Celebrated annually on the 6th September, National Read a Book Day is an exciting day that encourages all of us to take a break and get reading, either curled up on the sofa or on your daily commute. We all consume so much digital media nowadays, from Instagram to Netflix, we're nearly always looking at our screens. With so much information and entertainment out there, it's easy to get overwhelmed. That's why the joy of losing yourself a book has a very special place in our hearts. Today, we thought we would share some of our favourite books on sustainability...

This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate by Naomi Klein

International bestseller and winner of multiple awards, this provocative, upfront book combines extensive research with emotive urgency to shine some truth onto the current climate emergency. This book manages to be hopeful without sugar-coating the facts of the state we find ourselves in. Diverse and inclusive, Klein examines the impacts of capitalism and climate disaster on communities that are already oppressed and struggling. This is a book we think everyone should read to better understand the environmental challenges of the 21st century and how societal change is the only way forward.

Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer

This heart-wrenching book played a large part in my personal journey towards vegetarianism when I was younger. Upfront and brutally honest, Foer investigates the moral dimensions of food and questions why it is that we eat animals. Starting from a neutral standpoint on the matter, Foer answers the question of whether he and his family should eat meat. Through a series of interviews and personal memoirs, Foer investigates the sustainability and the ethics around eating meat. Foer encourages the reader to actively engage in the discussion and to ultimately come to your own conclusions, without bias.
