As the Nation prepares to celebrate the the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, Keep Britain Tidy are urging the public to keep their celebrations 'Green for the Queen' by adopting more eco-friendly tips for a sustainable celebration. The charity has highlighted the importance of being kind to the environment whilst celebrating through key areas such as re-using and repurposing items around our homes, to ensuring that any waste that is created is recyclable.
Celebrations should be a time of joy, but that doesn't mean we can't be conscious of our choices. With a few small changes, we can all make sure we're Green for the Queen whilst enjoying the festivities! Some of our top tips for making your party more sustainable are;
- Use your normal plates, cups and cutlery instead of buying disposables. Don't have enough for all your guests? Try shopping at your local charity shops to pick up extra tablewares. If you do need to buy disposables, make sure they are made from recycled materials and/or can be recycled. Vegware make a great range of plant-based, compostable plates, cups and cutlery.
- Try to avoid buying prepackaged foods and instead enjoy the satisfaction of making things for yourself! Your guests are bound to be impressed, plus you can massively reduce the amount of plastic waste at your celebration. Try and serve seasonal fruits and vegetables and keep meat-based options to a minimum. Do your best not to over cater, and be sure to save any left-overs and reduce your food waste. - Go green with your decorations by getting crafty and making your own! Bunting is a simple craft project that is great for kids too. Try using scrap fabric from old clothing or bedding, or make paper bunting by repurposing old paper and magazines. You can also keep your eye out for things you already have around the home that can be repurposed for your Jubilee celebrations such as anything red, white or blue. If you are buying new, buy sustainable decorations that you can use again and again. Need some inspo? Shop our Jubilee edit here.
- Wherever you are celebrating, ensure that all waste is disposed of correctly and responsibly. Recycle as much of your waste as possible and always donate items that could be reused to a charity shop if you no longer want them. Wishing everyone a safe & sustainable Jubilee weekend!
